Our History

In 1939, when Reuben Sansgaard participated in an FFA project that included growing and selling open pollinated seed corn to neighbors, it sparked, for him, a keen interest in agronomy that led him to Iowa State College, now ISU. Unfortunately, due to his father's declining health in 1942, Reuben had to return home to take over the farming operation.

Soon after, Reuben started growing certified seed oats, and soybeans. As new public varieties were released through Iowa State University's Committee for Agricultural Development he purchased foundation seed, and followed the guidelines for producing registered and certified seed.

From that humble beginning in 1939, Sansgaard Seed Farms, Inc., now known by its logo name, Prairie Brand Seed, gradually, and steadily developed into a major competitive seed company that markets proprietary soybeans and corn across the western corn-belt states and through more than four hundred dealers.

Brian Sansgaard, present owner/manager of Prairie Brand Seed, is a fourth generation farmer of the land where his dad, Reuben, planted his FFA plot of seed corn in 1939. Having the same dedicated interest in the seed business as his dad, Prairie Brand Seed has continued to flourish under his management.
